Neapoli Voion, to give it its full name, is nestled near the foot of Laconia on the Vatika Peninsular. It’s a pleasant small port town with restaurants, bars and a couple of hotels lining the harbour area. Apart from the Archaeological Museum there’s no real reason to visit here, but it’s a great place to be based for a short break in order to explore the area. The wonderful Kastania Cave is only half an hour away [by car] and Monemvasia is a 40 minute drive. Closer to hand is the underwater city of Pavlopetri which is just off the sandy Pounta beach, a ten minute drive away. I suspect that the main reason most people visit Neapoli is to get the ferry to the island of Kythira, which was the very reason we were here. The small port of Pounta is also where you can grab the ferry for the short ten minute hop to Elafonisos.
We stayed one night at the Limira Mare Hotel which was near the port and the restaurants. It’s a large hotel, but very comfortable and the staff were wonderful and the breakfast was lovely. On the day of our ferry to Kythira they allowed us to have a shower in our room well beyond our checkout time so we were lovely and fresh for the journey after visiting the beach which is literally just over the road from the hotel. The beach in front of our hotel was shingly and sandy and pleasant.
We had an excellent dinner at Tsiveri Taverna [written thus-Τζιβαέρι] but all of the restaurants in the area looked tempting.
Ferry to Kythira.
In peak season it’s advisable to book in advance, especially if you have a car. There’s no terminal as such so we had a picnic by our car which we bought from a taverna over the road. Boarding was a bit chaotic and the cars were squeezed in like sardines in a can but we found the hour and a quarter journey to Diakofti very pleasant and comfortable.
