You can fly to Plovdiv direct from the UK but we opted to fly from Gatwick to Sofia and then we got a coach to Plovdiv. We also got a coach back to Sofia on our return. This worked well for us and you can find out more about the Coach to Plovdiv from Sofia HERE. It goes without saying that Sofia is a wonderful city to visit and I have more information about Sofia HERE.

Alyosha Monument on Liberators Hill

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria but it has quite a different feel to it than Sofia. The areas of most interest to the visitor are The Unesco listed Old Town and Kapana District, both which have their own unique vibe.

Built on the banks of the Maritsa River spanning 7 hills, there has been evidence of settlements from 6000 years BC. There are wonderful Roman Ruins to see as well as monuments, museums, mosques and churches. It’s easy to do lots of steps in Plovdiv so take comfortable shoes.

We stayed at Hotel Ego which is well positioned next to a small green not far from Donduka Gradina Park, just a ten minute walk or so outside of the city centre. It’s actually next to the synagogue, not that you would know it as the synagogue is hidden behind high walls. The hotel owner helped us book to see the synagogue with the caretaker for which we were so grateful. Our room was large, clean and comfortable, breakfast was good too. We loved our stay here.

Plovdiv is also the ideal base to explore the beautiful Rhodope Mountains as well as the Bachkovo Monastery and Asen’s Fortress.
