To the west of Kalamata is Messinia although it also encompasses The Exo Mani to the south which I have covered under ‘The Mani’. Kalamata is the only real city in the Southern Peloponnese and it has a real buzz about it.
The international airport is only ten minutes drive from the city and is most likely your entry point into The Peloponnese. Package holiday companies tend to focus on the small resort of Finikounda on the West Coast near Methoni.

Messinia is blessed with attractive villages and towns, such as Methoni and Koroni, There are also the ancient sites of Messene and Nestor’s Palace, superb beaches and lagoons, and Monasteries.
There are mountains with amazing views as well as fertile valleys, rivers and waterfalls. If you want to visit these places you will need a car.

Of course, you can just relax, swim, eat and enjoy the sunset. Sounds great to me.
