Most guidebooks and people say that you just have to stay overnight in Monemvasia. If you choose to do so I am sure you will have a wonderful time but it will come at a premium. I have stayed in Gefyra on the mainland twice now and have been very comfortable in mind, body, spirit [and pocket] on both occasions. OK, Gefyra is not as magical a place as Monemvasia but it has great views of the rock. It’s just a typical seaside town that you can find anywhere in Greece, with a great view. The perfect place to wind down [and wine] down after a hard day exploring.

Accommodation

If you do choose to stay on the rock itself you may need to check if the accommodation can help you with your luggage if required as no cars can enter the town. Some hotels do offer a porter service. Your cases may be popped onto a wheelbarrow and transported to your abode by a muscly gentleman seemingly blissfully unaware and completely unnafected by the heat.

If you are on a budget I can recommend the Hotel Pramataris in Gefyra which is to the left of the causeway [the quieter side]. Rooms are pleasant, so is breakfast and the host very friendly. You can park right outside of the hotel.

Eating and drinking

Yep, you guessed it, eating can come at a premium in Monemvasia too. I would advise having a peak at the menu before entering the establishment to check on the prices. That said I did have a tasty and affordable meal at Matoula in Monemvasia.

The small harbour in Gefyra is lined with bars and restaurants and is an ideal and offers a more affordable option for dinner and a drinky. It’s actually a lovely setting and you can watch the rock disappear into the night as you dine. In 2023 I ate at the fish restaurant- Mateo’s which was excellent and Mateo was a real character. I can also recommend Di Porto as a fine place for a pre dinner cocktail.
