The Castle and causeway viewed from the Bourtzi Tower.

Methoni has a lovely buzz about it and is worth a wander but the main reason for coming here is the amazing castle. Entry is via an impressive 14 arched stone bridge.

The rather impressive entrance to the Castle

The main body that remains of the castle is mostly 18th Century but some parts, such as the Bourtzi Tower which is accessed via a sea causeway, dates back to the 16th Century. It was in this tower in 1500 that soldiers and residents made their last stand against the invading Turks. They were all slaughtered which makes standing in this beautiful spot a sombre experience.
