Ancient Troezen is just below the Methana Peninsular near the village of Trizina. You could combine visiting Troezen and the surrounding area with Methana in one day. The site is signposted as the Sanctuary of Hippolytus so don’t look for signs for Ancient Troezen as there aren’t any! Theseus was born here [a very long time ago] and it is alleged he lifted a large heavy stone which had been placed on top of his fathers’ sword and sandals for some reason. This stone is by a road sign on a junction of the main road not far from this site. [It looks bloody heavy!]. If you have found the stone in the photo below, the dirt track to the left takes you to Devil’s Bridge and The Tower of Diateichisma, [see more below]. The road on the right leads towards Ancient Troezen.

Ancient Troezen

It’s a short drive up the track to the entrance and entry is free. If the gates are open you are in! On our visit there was no-one else around. The remains that are visible date from around the 4th century BC. The site is quite large [well it was a city once] and there are some English signs dotted around. The photo above shows the remains of the Banquet Hall and the ones below are of the Byzantine Bishop’s Palace

The Tower of Diateichisma

This tower is up the dirt track to the left of Theseus Stone. The base of the tower dates from the 5th century BC. Locals may refer to it as the Tower of Damalas or the Palace of Theseus.

Devil’s Bridge

If you keep going past the tower you arrive at dead end but there is a small place to park [and turn around]. This is at the edge of a steep gorge with a natural stone arch bridge spanning it. At the bottom of the gorge are small waterfalls and rock pools where you can take a swim or a paddle but the paths leading down are precipitous in places and very slippery.
