Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa is situated on the Atlantic coast to one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. It is South Africa’s oldest city with a complex blend of cultural influences. The iconic Table Mountain is visible from most parts of the city. South Africa has two other capitals: Bloemfontein, the judicial capital and Pretoria, the administrative capital.

Several areas are of interest to visitors- The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is where you will find shops, restaurants and museums as well as the Gateway to Robben Island, the infamous prison where political prisoners including Nelson Mandela were held. The City Centre is vibrant and District Six is where you can find the District Six Museum which focuses on the forced removal of the inhabitants during the years of apartheid. The suburbs also have much to offer including Kirstenbosch where you can visit the wonderful Botanical Garden. Of course a visit to Table Mountain is a must!

Cape Town is also well positioned for excursions to The Winelands to the east and the Cape Peninsular to the south.

If you want to see wildlife there are plenty of options including dolphin watching from the harbour. You may well trip over a seal on the Waterfront! There are penguins on Boulders Beach which is only an hour away from Cape Town on the Cape Peninsular. Hermanus, which is a couple of hours to the south east is well known for whale watching. A one or two day Safari is also within easy reach of the city. If this is your first time to Cape Town then you should have a look at my Practicalities page which has lots of helpful tips and advice.
