The wreck of the Dimitrios
Dimitrios shipwreck
Although the wreck is not actually in the Mani, [it’s in Laconia] it can be clearly seen from Gythio in the bay to the east and it makes sense to include it here. The ship has been deteriorating since 1981. Do not attempt to climb on board the wreck for obvious reasons. It is on Selinitsa Beach and you can see it clearly from the road as you drive past. The beaches here are sandy and it’s a lovely place for a swim.

Mavrovouni Castle
The village of Mavrovouni is south of Gythio. The castle is up the hill from the village square to the left of the church. Several towers were destroyed by the Turks in 1803 and the castle had been abandoned by 1821. Most of the internal structures have disappeared but the walls are still imposing. Mavrovouni also has a couple of lovely beaches which are well worth a visit.

Passavas Castle
If you are approaching Gythio from the south you may be able to catch a glimpse of the walls of the 13th Century Passavas Castle which is just off the main road from Areopoli. There is no path leading up to the castle so if you want a closer look you will need to scramble through the undergrowth. Shorts and sandals are not advisable.
